Jaz Parks has enough trouble in her personal life. What she doesn't need is more trouble with her vampire boss and another mission. This time she has to retrieve a vital piece of biotechnology by killing the maniac who stole it: an ancient Chinese vamp. Their cover in this mission: professional entertainers at the Corpus Christi Winter Festival.

The crew's all here: a psychic, a techno-wizard, a singing vampire, a juggling PI, and Jaz. Holy crap in a bottomless well, Jaz is going to bellydance. It's definitely, probably, quite possibly going to be the end of the world as we know it.

My Thoughts
I am really loving this series. Jaz is sarcastic and irreverent, and I can't help but love her. Add to that all of her many annoying yet hilarious sidekicks and one incredibly sexy vampire, and there is really no way this book can go wrong!

In this second installment, Jaz and co. have been sent to Texas to retrieve one of Bergman's creations - a set of body armor that is bio-enhanced in some way to interact with both its wearer and its environment, essentially making the wearer unkillable. Predictably, Jaz accepts this challenge just as Barney does on How I Met Your Mother. What I enjoyed about this mission was that it didn't hinge on just one thing. There was a significant amount of technology involved as well as your usual spy tricks, yet there was still magic from Cassandra, intelligence from Cole, and vampire badassery from Vayl. No one on this team is useless, and no one can get away with not pulling their own weight. They are a cohesive unit (at least when they really need to have it together... downtime is another story) and it's nice to see everyone be evenly necessary. Just because Jaz has her own paranormal skills doesn't mean that she can go off on her own, because she isn't skilled enough to do everything on her own. It's a nice change of pace from almost every other urban fantasy series out there.

Also, I have a total book crush on Vayl. Oh, baby, he is one hot vampire!
