Reading for a Cure was inspired by my mom's best friend.
Ten years ago, my mom's best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. They caught it early - it was still stage 1A - and they said she should be fine. Well, they were wrong. Not only did it come back several times, but it also spread throughout her body. In January of last year, she was diagnosed as terminal. I have never seen anyone fight as hard as this woman. She is, hands-down, the strongest woman I know. The thing is, though - no one should have to go through what she has.
To help make that a reality, I am dedicating 2012 to Reading for a Cure. I will be asking my friends and family to sponsor me, just like a regular read-a-thon, and all of the donations will be given to a charity supporting breast cancer research. My dad used to be able to get his company to match donations, so hopefully that will work out again too (even though he works for a different company now.. let's keep our fingers crossed!).
I would like to invite all of you to join me in Reading for a Cure. I am not affiliated with any organizations, so I can't have you send donations my way. What I would ask, though, is that you get people to sponsor you for a certain length of time - a week, a month, a few months, or even a year - for whatever tracking system you choose to use - pages read, books read, minutes read, comments on review posts, etc. - donate the money to the cancer organization of your choice, and keep me updated with how much money you have raised. I will be posting monthly updates throughout the year.
