I was born 23 years ago today. Yep, I'm a Groundhog Baby - Punxsatawny Phil's paw prints are on my birth certificate! :)
When I was a kid, my grandpa used to say that if I saw my shadow, I'd get six more weeks of presents. It never worked out, but I would try so hard! I would walk around the house with my eyes closed or head tipped up toward the ceiling until I inevitably tripped and saw my own shadow on the way down. I'm sure I looked pretty foolish!
This year's birthday was pretty great. I celebrated my birthday over the weekend. First up was a book signing with the awesome Colleen Gleason (aka Joss Ware) out in Ann Arbor, dragging Boyfriend along with me so I could get all 11 books signed. Then we went to dinner with my parents, where they surprised me with a shiny new Kindle! I'm still not big into ebooks, but it will be great to use with NetGalley. Very exciting! Boyfriend got me a cover and lighted case for it too, so it's all tricked out. He's even coming home from out-of-town training to make me an actual birthday dinner. What a catch! :)
This year, though, I wanted to give myself a present: Releasing myself from reading obligations. Since I started blogging consistently last fall, I've noticed a big increase in the number of books I didn't enjoy. In January, I started to cut back on ARC reviews by removing myself from a number of tours and not signing up for new ones unless it was a must read, but I still felt guilty about it. Today, I am taking charge of my reading. If I read an ARC, it will be because I am 99% certain that I will love it. If I pick up a book off the shelves, it will be because of my reaction, and no one else's. (I know this all sounds very dramatic, but reading should be something you enjoy, not a chore!)
So Happy Birthday to me. Here's to another year of great books!
