ANGELFIRE
(Angelfire #1)
by Courtney Allison Moulton

Released: February 15, 2010

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

THE OTHER SIDE OF DARK
by Sarah Smith

Released: November 2, 2010

Since losing both of her parents, fifteen-year-old Katie can see and talk to ghosts, which makes her a loner until fellow student Law sees her drawing of a historic house and together they seek a treasure rumored to be hidden there by illegal slave-traders.

Law Walker knew Katie Mullens before she was crazy. Before her mother died. Law knows Katie’s crazy now, but she’s always been talented. And she keeps filling sketch pads even though her drawings have gone a little crazy as well—dark, bloody. What Law doesn’t know is that these drawings are real. Or were real. Katie draws what she sees—and Katie sees dead people. People who have died—recently, and not so recently—in accidents, from suicide, even a boy who was trapped in a house that burned down more than 100 years ago. And it’s this boy who makes Law want to get to know Katie all over again. So what if his dad doesn’t want him dating a white girl? So what if people think Katie is dangerous? The ghost boy is hiding a secret that Law needs to know—and it’s much bigger, much more shocking than anyone ever expected.

BLOODTHIRSTY
Flynn Meaney

Pale skin? Check. Strange-colored eyes? Check. Lanky body and brooding demeanor? Check and check. Paranormal abilities? Not quite.

Awkward and allergic to the sun, sixteen-year-old Finbar Frame is the sensitive guy who never gets the girl. But when he notices that all the female students at his new school are obsessed with the vampire book Bloodthirsty, Finbar decides to exploit his lack of pigmentation and become a vampire. Or at least fake it . . .  to get a date.

Bloodthirsty is a hilarious send-up of today's pop-culture infatuations and a pitch-perfect portrait of a lovably neurotic teenage guy on a quest to be cool.

On My Wishlist (#6)

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City every Saturday in which we list books we desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. The books can be old, new or forthcoming.

All of these books will be released on November 2nd!

FIREWALKER
(Stormwalker #2)
by Allyson James

When Mick goes missing, it's up to Janet to find him and figure out how to keep him safe. She'll need a little help from her friends, old and new: Nash and Coyote; Cassandra, a wicked Wicca, and a few strange beings who are stirring things up in Magellan.

The first book in this series was amazing! Can't wait to read the next installment.

VIRALS
by Kathy Reichs & Brendan Reichs

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they're a pack. They are Virals.

I got to read an ARC of this book - it was incredibly well-done. Reichs definitely knows how to tell a story!

PLAY OF PASSION
(Psy/Changeling #9)
by Nalini Singh

In his position as Tracker for the SnowDancer pack, Drew Kincaid must rein in rogue changelings who've lost control of their animal halves- even if it means killing those who've gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage-to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite...and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

If you've read Singh's Psy/Changeling series, you know why I want this book. If you haven't read this series yet, make sure you fix that soon!

ARC Review: The Other Side of Dark by Sarah Smith

THE OTHER SIDE OF DARK
by Sarah Smith

Since losing both of her parents, fifteen-year-old Katie can see and talk to ghosts, which makes her a loner until fellow student Law sees her drawing of a historic house and together they seek a treasure rumored to be hidden there by illegal slave-traders.

The ghost boy is hiding a secret that Law needs to know—and it’s much bigger, much more shocking than anyone ever expected.

My Review
The Other Side of Dark is so much more than just a simple ghost story. It combines factual historical details with so many deep issues - family issues, racism, slavery - but doesn't come off as overly heavy-handed. Katie's and Law's stories intertwine as they come together to save Pinebank, a historic house in danger of being torn down for safety reasons. As they fight to find a reason to cancel the demolition, they discover unsavory details about the house and its owners and, in the process, are forced to face their own demons.

I had no idea what this book would be about going in - I signed up purely because of the beautiful cover art. It was such a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed learning about the history of Boston (not everything is historically accurate, but the majority of it is). Katie and Law were fantastic, richly layered characters, and I loved following them through their adventures. I can't recommend this book more!

How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks

HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE VAMPIRE
(Love at Stake #1)
by Kerrelyn Sparks

So what if he's a bit older and usually regards a human female as dinner, not a dinner date? Yes, Roman Draganesti is a vampire, but a vampire who lost one of his fangs sinking his teeth into something he shouldn't have. Now he has one night to find a dentist before his natural healing abilities close the wound, leaving him a lop–sided eater for all eternity.

Things aren't going well for Shanna Whelan either...After witnessing a gruesome murder by the Russian mafia, she's next on their hit list. And her career as a dentist appears to be on a downward spiral because she's afraid of blood. When Roman rescues her from an assassination attempt, she wonders if she's found the one man who can keep her alive. Though the attraction between them is immediate and hot, can Shanna conquer her fear of blood to fix Roman's fang? And if she does, what will prevent Roman from using his fangs on her...

My Review
Shanna Whelan is having a really bad day. Not only is she stuck in a crappy job set up by the Witness Protection Program after witnessing a murder, but now the Russian mafia has found her. Roman Draganesti isn't having such a great day either. Product testing led to a broken fang, and if he doesn't get it fixed before sleeping for the day, he'll be a lopsided feeder for the rest of his immortal life. When it turns out that the mobster in charge of the hit on Shanna is a rival vampire, Roman decides to take Shanna under his protection. But protecting a human isn't as easy as it looks.

I went into this book thinking that it would be okay, but not great. However, it turned out to be a great story! How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire is a light-hearted, fast-paced vampire chick lit tale. Sparks builds a unique world with her brand of vampire mythology. Although there are a lot of characters, the focus still remains on Shanna and Roman's story. This was a very quick, enjoyable read, and I have high hopes for the rest of the series.

Love at Stake is the first in a well-established series. Kerrelyn Sparks's bibliography, with info on the nine published books and various anthologies in the series, can be found here.
