The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll

by Steven Kroll
illustrated by Jeni Bassett

Once there were two mice who fell in love with the same pumpkin. Clayton watered the pumpkin during the day. Desmond watered it at night. The two mice did not know about each other. Then the pumpkin grew and grew and grew into... THE BIGGEST PUMPKIN EVER.

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever is another childhood favorite. Kroll wrote parallel stories for the two mice, Clayton and Desmond, as they discover and take care of the pumpkin. Clayton wants to win the grand prize in the town's pumpkin contest, and Desmond wants to have the biggest jack-o'-lantern in the neighborhood. The mice don't have a clue about each other, but the reader knows what's going on the whole time, making it a funny read. The book teaches some basic gardening concepts as well as a lesson in sharing.
